3:32 AM – Earthquake in Abruzzo

On April 6, 2009, at exactly 3:32 AM, a devastating earthquake struck L'Aquila and its surrounding areas in Abruzzo, Italy. It claimed 309 lives, injured thousands, caused billions of euros in damages and left a profound scar on the region's identity. Homes crumbled, centuries-old architecture was lost, and entire communities were displaced overnight. Yet amidst the destruction, stories of resilience, solidarity, and hope emerged, defining the true spirit of Italy with volunteers come from all over the country to help the affected population.

This gallery is both a tribute and a record—my poor attempt to honour the lives affected and to bear witness to the enduring human strength in the face of tragedy. Through these images, I’ve sought to capture the surreal silence of those days, the dignified pain and resilience etched into the faces of the survivors, and the profound connection between people and the land they refuse to abandon. This is a story not just of loss, but of rebirth—a reminder of the fragility of life and the courage it takes to rebuild.
